Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) achieved a record 8 million passenger movements in one year, becoming the first airport in the country to reach this figure.
“Today we celebrate 8 million passengers, which represent 8 million adventures, smiles, new ways of looking at life, family reunions and happy vacations for each of the passengers who have created memories through our airport. This recognition is the result of the hard work of our airport community, who are committed to offering our visitors a safe and pleasant travel experience,” said Frank Elías Rainieri, president and CEO of Grupo Puntacana.
He added that this result is the result of decades of hard work, which is evidence of the progress and growth of the country and the Dominican tourism industry.
“Last December 17, we welcomed the 39th anniversary of our Punta Cana International Airport, and we celebrate with humility and gratitude that a brand of Dominican origin that began 39 years ago, is the benchmark of a tourist destination known internationally. Today, it receives 65% of the tourists who visit our country,” Rainieri pointed out.
This year the PUJ received for the sixth consecutive year the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award from the Airports Council International, known as the leading program for benchmarking and measuring travelers’ experiences at airports, assessing passenger satisfaction.
Last week, the airport received 574 international flights, another record for the airfield, which had registered a ceiling of 537 international flights in 2021. It is worth noting that during the months of June and July 2022, Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) achieved a record number of passengers that have transited through this terminal in recent years, with 1,175,875 passengers entering and leaving the national territory from 28 countries in Asia, Europe, North America and the Caribbean.
New air frequencies have been key to the increase in passenger traffic, especially from Colombia, as well as traditional markets such as the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and England.
Terminal B Expansion: Punta Cana International Airport
The expansion of Terminal B of the Punta Cana International Airport will be carried out with an investment of US$80 million, with the capacity to handle three million passengers.
This project will cover an area of approximately 25 thousand square meters and will have seven boarding gates, as well as seven air bridges. Construction is expected to be completed by January 2023. The expansion is in the hands of local architects and engineers.
